Plans for direct UK–Germany rail link one step closer
Eurostar and Deutsche Bahn confirm joint plans for high-speed rail between London, Cologne, and Frankfurt by the early 2030s
The UK and German governments, along with Eurostar and Deutsche Bahn, have signed a memorandum of understanding to develop a direct high-speed rail connection between London and key German cities, including Cologne and Frankfurt. The new routes are expected to launch in the early 2030s, providing millions of passengers with faster, more convenient, and environmentally friendly travel options across Europe.
This project is part of a broader strategy to enhance international rail connectivity, reduce carbon emissions, and strengthen economic ties between the two countries. A joint UK-Germany taskforce has been established to address operational, regulatory, and border control challenges, ensuring the successful implementation of the new services. The initiative is also expected to boost tourism, create jobs, and stimulate investment, further integrating the UK into a better-connected Europe.
