Government approves UK's largest power-producing solar farm in Lincolnshire

The 800 MW Springwell Solar Farm has been granted approval, becoming the largest solar project in the UK by power generation capacity and marking the 25th nationally significant clean energy project greenlit since July 2024.

The UK government has approved what will become the country's largest power-producing solar farm, in a move ministers say is central to protecting British households from volatile international fossil fuel markets.

The Springwell Solar Farm, an 800 MW facility, is set to generate enough electricity to power more than 180,000 homes annually — equivalent to roughly half the homes in Lincolnshire, according to its developer. The decision, announced on Wednesday 8 April by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, marks a significant milestone in the government's clean energy ambitions.

The approval makes Springwell the 25th nationally significant clean energy project to receive the green light since July 2024. Taken together, these 25 projects represent enough generating capacity to power the equivalent of more than 12.5 million homes, the government said. The portfolio includes offshore wind farms, other solar installations, and energy infrastructure projects spread across England.

Energy Minister Michael Shanks framed the decision in the context of global instability, citing conflicts in Ukraine and Iran as evidence of the risks posed by reliance on fossil fuel markets beyond Britain's control. "We are driving further and faster for clean homegrown power that we control to protect the British people and bring down bills for good," Mr Shanks said. "It is crucial we learn the lessons of the conflict in the Middle East — solar is one of the cheapest forms of power available and is how we get off the rollercoaster of international fossil fuel markets and secure our own energy independence."

The government has positioned solar energy as a cornerstone of its clean power strategy, noting it is among the cheapest forms of electricity generation available. The Springwell approval builds on a series of recent policy measures, including plans to make plug-in solar panels available in UK shops, a requirement for all new homes in England to be built with solar panels as standard, and the fast-tracking of the next renewables auction to July this year.

Among the other major projects approved since mid-2024 are several large-scale solar farms including Gate Burton Energy Park, Cottam Solar Project, and the East Yorkshire Solar Farm, alongside significant offshore wind developments such as the Mona, Morgan, and Morecambe projects. The breadth of approvals reflects a concerted governmental push across multiple renewable technologies.
